We’ve all been there — that mix of excitement and nerves before family photo day. You’ve planned the outfits, packed the snacks, and crossed your fingers that everyone smiles at the same time. But when toddlers are involved, things don’t always go quite to plan… and that’s okay!

As a family photographer (and mum myself), I’ve learned that the best photos often come from real moments — a giggle, a cuddle, or even a cheeky escape. If you’ve got a little whirlwind joining your session, here are my top tips to help keep them happy, relaxed, and camera-ready.

1. Keep It Light and Fun

Toddlers have short attention spans — the more playful the session feels, the better. I’ll often turn photos into a game: “Who can run the fastest to mummy?”, “Can you show me your best twirl?”, or “Let’s play peekaboo!”

When they’re having fun, genuine smiles appear naturally — no forced poses needed.

2. Let Them Lead

Some of the sweetest moments happen when we let toddlers take charge. If they want to hold a flower, climb onto dad’s shoulders, or show off their dance moves, we go with it. I’ll gently guide the session around what they enjoy most — that’s how we capture those beautifully real expressions.

3. Bring Familiar Comforts

Whether it’s a favourite teddy, blanket, or small toy, having something familiar can help little ones feel safe and confident. Don’t worry if it sneaks into a few photos — it’s all part of the story, and often ends up being a lovely detail to remember later.

4. Snacks and Breaks Are Your Best Friends

A quick snack or drink can make all the difference. We’ll pause whenever your little one needs a moment — happy toddlers make for happy photos! Try to bring mess-free options like raisins, breadsticks, or fruit pouches to keep hands clean.

5. Don’t Stress the Perfect Pose

Toddlers move. A lot. And that’s completely fine! The best images are rarely the ones where everyone is perfectly still — they’re the ones full of laughter, hugs, and tiny personalities shining through. If you relax, they’ll relax too.

6. Dress for Comfort

Choose outfits that your child can move freely in. Avoid anything too tight or scratchy — if they’re comfy, they’re much more likely to stay cheerful throughout the shoot. Soft layers and neutral colours also photograph beautifully.

7. Trust the Process

As a photographer, I’ve seen every kind of toddler mood — from shy snuggles to full-on wiggle mode. I’ll always adapt to their pace, so there’s no need to worry. Even if it feels chaotic in the moment, those little in-between moments are often the ones you’ll treasure most.

💛 A Final Thought

Family photos don’t have to be perfect — they just have to be real. The giggles, the cuddles, the slightly wild energy… that’s exactly what makes this stage of life so precious. My goal is always to capture the love and connection behind it all.

So take a breath, pack a few snacks, and get ready for some fun — I promise, we’ll get beautiful images no matter how the day unfolds.
